How Vitamin C actually works
Beyond the antioxidant reputation, vitamin C's specific job is as an enzyme cofactor — it keeps iron and copper in the reduced state that certain enzymes need to function. The best-defined are prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase, which cross-link collagen; without vitamin C collagen is structurally unsound, which is scurvy. It's also the cofactor for dopamine beta-hydroxylase (dopamine to noradrenaline) and for carnitine synthesis. Absorption is actively transported and saturates: past roughly 200 mg in one sitting the fraction absorbed falls steeply and the rest is excreted, which is the honest limit on megadosing.

The trap runs the other way too: something can be clinically validated and still do very little for you specifically. A statistically significant result in a study population is not a promise about your body.

- 📊 Correlative — observational or epidemiological data. Suggestive, and genuinely useful for direction, but it cannot establish cause.
- 🧪 Theoretical / mechanistic — the mechanism is understood and often demonstrated in cells or animals, and the human trial doesn’t exist yet. Unproven is not the same as ineffective. Plenty of what’s standard practice today sat here five years ago.
✗ is a safety flag, not a grade. Where you see it, the concern is harm — not a disappointing trial. A compound tested for one purpose and found not to help there can still be worth studying somewhere else, so a negative result never gets rendered as a cross. It sits alongside the tier, because something can be both well-studied and genuinely risky.
My job is to tell you which one you’re looking at, and let you make the call. Grading something low isn’t me dismissing it — it’s me refusing to oversell it. This is the research space, and being able to reason forward from a mechanism matters as much as waiting for the trial.
Cheap, safe and mostly oversold. It does not prevent colds in the general population — the trials are clear on that — though it modestly shortens them, and there's a real signal in people under heavy physical stress. The genuinely useful application is the one nobody markets: taken with a collagen or gelatin source about an hour before loading a tendon, it supports the collagen-synthesis step. Split doses beat one large one because of the absorption ceiling.
Vitamin C — safety & side effects
- Loose stools and stomach cramps are the dose-limiting effect and are how most people find their ceiling. Buffered forms are gentler.
- Increases oxalate excretion — a real kidney stone risk above 1 g/day in people who form them. Also increases iron absorption, which matters in haemochromatosis.
- Upper limit 2,000 mg/day. High doses interfere with some blood glucose meters and with faecal occult blood tests.
