B-Complex

Best-in-class: Basic B Complex

Vitamins✅ Clinically validated📊 Correlative data🧪 Theoretical

The full B-vitamin family in bioactive forms (e.g., methylfolate, methylcobalamin, P5P) rather than cheap synthetic versions — important for people with MTHFR variants who methylate poorly.

How B-Complex actually works

The B vitamins mostly aren't interchangeable — they're separate coenzymes that happen to converge on two systems: pulling energy out of food, and one-carbon metabolism. B1, B2, B3 and B5 are required at specific steps of the citric-acid cycle and the electron transport chain, so a shortfall shows up as fatigue with no other clean sign. B6, B9 and B12 run the methylation cycle, which recycles homocysteine into methionine and supplies methyl groups for DNA, neurotransmitters and detoxification. The bioactive forms matter because the pathway conversions themselves need enzymes that not everyone runs efficiently.

How to read these tiers

These tiers tell you how much human evidence exists — not how well something works. This is the research space, and most of what’s in here is new rather than disproven. Something sitting at “theoretical” usually means nobody has funded the trial, not that the trial was run and failed.

The trap runs the other way too: something can be clinically validated and still do very little for you specifically. A statistically significant result in a study population is not a promise about your body.

✗ is a safety flag, not a grade. Where you see it, the concern is harm — not a disappointing trial. A compound tested for one purpose and found not to help there can still be worth studying somewhere else, so a negative result never gets rendered as a cross. It sits alongside the tier, because something can be both well-studied and genuinely risky.

My job is to tell you which one you’re looking at, and let you make the call. Grading something low isn’t me dismissing it — it’s me refusing to oversell it. This is the research space, and being able to reason forward from a mechanism matters as much as waiting for the trial.

Coach Cam’s take

A reasonable insurance policy, not a treatment. The bright yellow urine is riboflavin doing exactly what it should — it's water-soluble and the excess leaves, which is a sign the dose exceeded need rather than a sign it's 'working'. The one to actually watch is B6: it's the B vitamin with a real ceiling, and sustained high doses cause a peripheral neuropathy that is slow to reverse. Check the label rather than assuming a B vitamin can't be overdone.

⚠️ Good to know: Harmless bright-yellow urine is just excess riboflavin.

Bloodwork to run alongside B-Complex

Run these before you start, and again after 8–12 weeks. A baseline you didn’t take is one you can never go back for.

MarkerWhat it’s watching for
Vitamin B12Same masking problem as any folate product — baseline before you start
Methylmalonic Acid (MMA)The test that catches what serum B12 misses
HomocysteineWhether the B vitamins are doing anything measurable
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)Organ baseline — and chronic high-dose B6 causes peripheral neuropathy

The Full Micronutrient Screen panel covers these in one order — 11 markers, $363.60 with the discount applied.
