Beetroot (Nitrates)

Best-in-class: Beetroot Nitrate

Cardiovascular✅ Clinically validated📊 Correlative data🧪 Theoretical

A dietary-nitrate source that the body converts to nitric oxide, improving blood flow, blood pressure and exercise efficiency.

How Beetroot (Nitrates) actually works

Dietary nitrate is reduced to nitrite by bacteria on the tongue, then to nitric oxide in the acidic and hypoxic conditions of hard-working tissue — a pathway completely independent of nitric oxide synthase, which is why it works when the enzymatic route is impaired. Beyond vasodilation it improves mitochondrial efficiency, producing more ATP per unit of oxygen consumed.

How to read these tiers

These tiers tell you how much human evidence exists — not how well something works. This is the research space, and most of what’s in here is new rather than disproven. Something sitting at “theoretical” usually means nobody has funded the trial, not that the trial was run and failed.

The trap runs the other way too: something can be clinically validated and still do very little for you specifically. A statistically significant result in a study population is not a promise about your body.

✗ is a safety flag, not a grade. Where you see it, the concern is harm — not a disappointing trial. A compound tested for one purpose and found not to help there can still be worth studying somewhere else, so a negative result never gets rendered as a cross. It sits alongside the tier, because something can be both well-studied and genuinely risky.

My job is to tell you which one you’re looking at, and let you make the call. Grading something low isn’t me dismissing it — it’s me refusing to oversell it. This is the research space, and being able to reason forward from a mechanism matters as much as waiting for the trial.

Coach Cam’s take

One of very few ergogenic aids with consistently replicated field results, reducing the oxygen cost of submaximal exercise by around 5% and lowering systolic blood pressure by 4 to 5 mmHg. The detail that matters: antibacterial mouthwash abolishes the effect entirely, because oral bacteria perform the first conversion. Timing is roughly two to three hours before the effort.

⚠️ Good to know: Don't use antibacterial mouthwash around dosing — it kills the oral bacteria needed to convert nitrate to NO.
⏱ Timing that matters for safety: Do not use antibacterial mouthwash - it kills the oral bacteria that perform the first reduction step and abolishes the effect entirely
