The plan of attack
In this order. Most people start at step four, which is why they change five things at once and learn nothing.
- Confirm the number is real
Anything that inflamed you in the last two weeks. hs-CRP is measuring the slow burn, but it cannot tell that apart from a cold, a dental infection, a vaccination or a brutal training session three days ago. Those push it into the high-risk band transiently and it reads identically. If hs-CRP is high, repeat it two to four weeks later while well. One elevated reading is not a cardiovascular risk signal — a persistently elevated one is. - Read it with its partner
Timing matters more here than almost any other marker. Test rested and well. Draw it alongside: ApoB (Apolipoprotein B), Ferritin, ESR (Sed Rate). - Work out which direction is yours
If it's high — A single value >10 mg/L usually means acute infection — repeat when well rather than over-interpreting. Persistent elevation is the meaningful finding. - Fix it in this order
Nutrition. Lose visceral fat — the single biggest lever. Mediterranean-style eating pattern, omega-3-rich fish, polyphenol-rich produce, reduced ultra-processed food and refined sugar.
Lifestyle. Sleep 7–9h, deload from over-training, see a dentist — periodontal disease is a common hidden cause, quit smoking, and manage stress.
Supplements. Omega-3 (EPA/DHA), curcumin (bioavailable form), vitamin D if deficient. Statins lower CRP substantially as a class effect.
Hormones. Treat the underlying autoimmune or inflammatory condition. Statins have a well-documented anti-inflammatory effect beyond lipid lowering.
Compounds. BPC-157 and KPV are frequently discussed for inflammatory and gut-related conditions in research contexts; hs-CRP is one objective way to track systemic change over time. Don't draw within 48–72h of a brutal session or an illness — you'll get a spuriously high number.
Work down the list, not across it. Adding a compound on top of an unfixed diet is why generic protocols fail. - Retest
3 months after intervention; repeat any high value. Change one thing at a time, or the retest can't tell you which thing worked.

Most abnormal results are interference, not disease. These are the things that measurably move this specific marker — check them before you change anything. Each one says whether the number is wrong and should be repeated, badly timed and should be redrawn, or real with a cause worth explaining.
They raise CRP through hepatic protein synthesis without any true increase in inflammation. This is the single most common reason a young healthy woman gets an alarming hs-CRP.

This is an acute-phase reactant — it moves substantially during any infection, injury or inflammatory episode, and the change has nothing to do with your baseline.

No hard or unfamiliar training for 48–72 hours before the draw.

Note what you were taking. Avoid NSAIDs for a few days if the question is baseline inflammation.
hs-CRP varies substantially in the same person week to week. A single value is a poor baseline.
Take two readings a fortnight apart and use the lower, or the average.
What hs-CRP (High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein) means in combination
A single marker tells you a little. Combinations tell you the story — these are the named patterns this marker takes part in, and what each one points at.
Residual inflammatory risk. Plaque forms and destabilises through inflammation as well as lipids, so hitting an ApoB target while CRP stays high leaves a meaningful part of the risk untouched.
Rule out the obvious first — CRP rises with any infection, injury or hard training, so retest rested and well. If it stays up: sleep, visceral fat, periodontal disease, gut health, omega-3s. Persistent unexplained elevation deserves a real workup.
Ferritin rises with inflammation, so a high value usually means inflammation rather than iron. When CRP is normal and saturation is genuinely high, iron overload moves up the list.
Saturation above 45% with a normal CRP is the combination that warrants haemochromatosis genetic testing — it is common, easily treated early, and does organ damage if it is missed for decades. Stop any iron supplement until this is sorted.
An active inflammatory state. Beyond its own risk, it distorts the panel — ferritin rises, albumin and zinc fall, iron studies mislead. Reading those markers at face value while this is running gives wrong answers.
Retest when well. If it persists with no obvious cause, that needs investigating rather than supplementing: autoimmune disease, chronic infection, dental disease, gut inflammation, poorly controlled metabolic disease. Do not interpret ferritin or iron studies until it settles.
F2-isoprostane is the most reliable oxidative stress measure available. Raised alongside metabolic markers, it is a consequence of the metabolic picture rather than a separate problem to buy antioxidants for.
Antioxidant supplements do not fix this and can blunt training adaptation. Blood sugar control, fat loss, sleep and stopping smoking move it. Fix the driver, retest in 3 months.
