How Slippery Elm actually works
The inner bark is rich in mucilage — polysaccharides that absorb water and form a viscous gel, coating irritated mucosa physically. There is some evidence it also stimulates mucus secretion reflexively through nerve endings in the gut lining, which would be a mild active mechanism rather than a purely mechanical one.
