How Paraxanthine actually works
Caffeine's primary metabolite, and the compound responsible for much of what people attribute to caffeine — roughly 80% of caffeine is converted to it. It is a more selective adenosine antagonist and a weaker phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which is the proposed reason for less anxiety and less cardiovascular stimulation at equivalent alertness.

- Adenosine antagonism like caffeine, but far weaker phosphodiesterase inhibition — PDE inhibition is the plausible source of jitter and heart-rate effects, so removing it is a coherent explanation for the cleaner profile.
These tiers tell you how much human evidence exists — not how well something works. This is the research space, and most of what’s in here is new rather than disproven. Something sitting at “theoretical” usually means nobody has funded the trial, not that the trial was run and failed.
The trap runs the other way too: something can be clinically validated and still do very little for you specifically. A statistically significant result in a study population is not a promise about your body.

A compound tested for one purpose and found not to help there can still be worth studying somewhere else, so a negative result never gets rendered as a cross. It sits alongside the tier, because something can be both well-studied and genuinely risky.

Skipping the conversion step removes a major source of individual variation, since CYP1A2 genotype determines how fast someone metabolises caffeine and therefore how they respond. Early human data supports the cleaner subjective profile. It is newer and correspondingly less studied than caffeine, and considerably more expensive for an effect most people can get from coffee.
Paraxanthine — safety & side effects
- The main metabolite of caffeine, so the effects are familiar: jitteriness, raised heart rate, insomnia. Additive with caffeine and other stimulants: jitteriness, raised heart rate, and disrupted sleep if taken after early afternoon.
- Shorter-acting than caffeine, which makes it easier to dose late without wrecking sleep — but 'easier' is not 'safe at 8pm'.
- Long-term safety has not been characterised — the trials run weeks to months, not years. That is a real limit on what anyone can tell you about daily use for a decade. Avoid in pregnancy and with arrhythmia.
