Choline Bitartrate
Best-in-class: Choline Bitartrate
An inexpensive choline source for acetylcholine (focus/memory), liver-fat transport and — importantly — a nutrient most people under-consume.
How Choline Bitartrate actually works
The cheapest choline salt. It raises plasma choline effectively enough for peripheral needs — phosphatidylcholine synthesis for VLDL export in the liver, and methyl-group donation via betaine — but crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly compared with Alpha-GPC or citicoline, because the transporter is saturable and low-affinity.
Choline Bitartrate quick facts
| Suggested dose | 500 mg daily (Alpha-GPC/CDP are more brain-targeted but pricier). |
| How often | Daily |
| Who it's for | Basic choline repletion, liver and cognition support. |
✅ Clinically validated
- Corrects widespread sub-optimal choline intake; supports liver (fatty-liver prevention) and acetylcholine.
- Essential nutrient with an established adequate intake most people miss.
📊 Correlative data
- Low choline intake tracks with fatty-liver risk and is common on modern diets.
🧪 Theoretical / extrapolated benefits
- A direct acetylcholine precursor, so the prediction is improved cholinergic transmission and therefore attention and memory. **The prediction largely fails, and the reason is instructive**: choline bitartrate crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly compared with alpha-GPC or citicoline, so the peripheral dose does not become central acetylcholine.
- Predicted downside: gut bacteria convert unabsorbed choline to TMAO, which associates with cardiovascular risk. That argues for the better-absorbed forms on two grounds rather than one.
These tiers tell you how much human evidence exists — not how well something works. This is the research space, and most of what’s in here is new rather than disproven. Something sitting at “theoretical” usually means nobody has funded the trial, not that the trial was run and failed.
The trap runs the other way too: something can be clinically validated and still do very little for you specifically. A statistically significant result in a study population is not a promise about your body.
- ✅ Clinically validated — human randomised trials or meta-analyses support it. The strongest footing available.
- 📊 Correlative — observational or epidemiological data. Suggestive, and genuinely useful for direction, but it cannot establish cause.
- 🧪 Theoretical / mechanistic — the mechanism is understood and often demonstrated in cells or animals, and the human trial doesn’t exist yet. Unproven is not the same as ineffective. Plenty of what’s standard practice today sat here five years ago.
✗ is a safety flag, not a grade. Where you see it, the concern is harm — not a disappointing trial. A compound tested for one purpose and found not to help there can still be worth studying somewhere else, so a negative result never gets rendered as a cross. It sits alongside the tier, because something can be both well-studied and genuinely risky.
My job is to tell you which one you’re looking at, and let you make the call. Grading something low isn’t me dismissing it — it’s me refusing to oversell it. This is the research space, and being able to reason forward from a mechanism matters as much as waiting for the trial.
Perfectly adequate for liver and methylation purposes and a poor choice for cognition, which is what most people buy it for. It also produces a noticeable fishy body odour in a subset of people who convert it heavily to TMA. If the goal is brain, pay for the better form; if the goal is fatty liver or methyl-group support, this is the sensible economy.
Choline Bitartrate — safety & side effects
- Fishy body odour is the signature effect — high choline intakes produce trimethylamine, and some people cannot clear it efficiently. Harmless, socially unwelcome, and reversible.
- GI upset, sweating and low mood at high doses. The tolerable upper limit is 3.5 g/day for adults.
- Raises TMAO, which is associated with cardiovascular risk — the significance is debated, but it is the reason citicoline or alpha-GPC are usually the better choices.
Not medical advice. If you take prescription medication or have a diagnosed condition, check this against it with a pharmacist or doctor — pharmacists are underused and free.
