Super EPA (Fish Oil)
Best-in-class: Super EPA
Thorne's classic high-EPA omega-3 — the flagship fish oil, weighted toward EPA (the more anti-inflammatory and mood-relevant of the two omega-3s).
How Super EPA (Fish Oil) actually works
Same fatty-acid biology as a standard fish oil, weighted deliberately toward EPA. That matters because EPA and DHA are not interchangeable: DHA is structural and concentrates in neural and retinal membranes, while EPA is the preferred substrate for the anti-inflammatory eicosanoid and resolvin pathways and competes most directly with arachidonic acid. EPA also does not carry DHA's tendency to raise LDL particle concentration, which is why the successful high-dose cardiovascular trial used a pure-EPA preparation rather than a mixed oil.

✅ Clinically validated
- High-EPA formulas lower triglycerides and support cardiovascular health (well-established RCT data).
- EPA-dominant omega-3 is the form with the strongest antidepressant-adjunct evidence.
📊 Correlative data
- A higher omega-3 index is associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.
🧪 Theoretical / extrapolated benefits
- EPA-derived resolvins actively resolve inflammation — a compelling mechanism still being translated.
These tiers tell you how much human evidence exists — not how well something works. This is the research space, and most of what’s in here is new rather than disproven. Something sitting at “theoretical” usually means nobody has funded the trial, not that the trial was run and failed.
The trap runs the other way too: something can be clinically validated and still do very little for you specifically. A statistically significant result in a study population is not a promise about your body.
- ✅ Clinically validated — human randomised trials or meta-analyses support it. The strongest footing available.
- 📊 Correlative — observational or epidemiological data. Suggestive, and genuinely useful for direction, but it cannot establish cause.
- 🧪 Theoretical / mechanistic — the mechanism is understood and often demonstrated in cells or animals, and the human trial doesn’t exist yet. Unproven is not the same as ineffective. Plenty of what’s standard practice today sat here five years ago.
✗ is a safety flag, not a grade. Where you see it, the concern is harm — not a disappointing trial. A compound tested for one purpose and found not to help there can still be worth studying somewhere else, so a negative result never gets rendered as a cross. It sits alongside the tier, because something can be both well-studied and genuinely risky.
My job is to tell you which one you’re looking at, and let you make the call. Grading something low isn’t me dismissing it — it’s me refusing to oversell it. This is the research space, and being able to reason forward from a mechanism matters as much as waiting for the trial.
The one to choose if your reason for taking fish oil is inflammation, joints or lipids rather than brain and eye support. If you're taking it for cognition or in pregnancy, DHA is the one you actually want and this is the wrong product. Don't read the pure-EPA trial result as applying to a standard supplement dose — that trial used four grams a day of prescription material, and it also reported more atrial fibrillation and bleeding.
Super EPA (Fish Oil) — safety & side effects
- Same fishy-burp and oxidation considerations as any fish oil.
- EPA-dominant products carry the atrial fibrillation signal most clearly — it was the high-dose EPA trials that produced it. Worth knowing if you have a history of AF or palpitations.
- Additive bleeding risk with anticoagulants and antiplatelets — warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, clopidogrel, and aspirin at any dose. The interaction is pharmacodynamic rather than metabolic, so it does not show up as a changed drug level; it shows up as bruising, nosebleeds or a raised INR. Stop at least two weeks before any surgery or dental extraction. Surgeons ask about prescription blood thinners and rarely about supplements, so this one is on you to volunteer.
Not medical advice. If you take prescription medication or have a diagnosed condition, check this against it with a pharmacist or doctor — pharmacists are underused and free.
