How Molybdenum actually works
Cofactor for three enzymes and no others. Sulfite oxidase converts sulfite to sulfate, which is the step that clears sulfites from food and from methionine metabolism. Aldehyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase handle a range of aldehydes — acetaldehyde among them — and purine breakdown to uric acid. That first enzyme is why molybdenum comes up in sulfite sensitivity and in mould-related protocols.

A compound tested for one purpose and found not to help there can still be worth studying somewhere else, so a negative result never gets rendered as a cross. It sits alongside the tier, because something can be both well-studied and genuinely risky.

Genuine deficiency is very rare outside of long-term parenteral nutrition, so the honest position is that most people supplementing this do not need it. The sulfite-sensitivity rationale is mechanistically coherent and thinly evidenced. Small doses are safe; large ones interfere with copper status, which is the practical limit.

- Very well tolerated; deficiency is essentially unknown outside of specific genetic conditions and long-term parenteral nutrition.
- The upper limit is 2,000 mcg/day. Very high intakes have been associated with gout-like joint pain and raised uric acid.
- Competes with copper for absorption; sustained high doses can cause copper deficiency.
