What the trials on Mitopure Firming Serum actually measured
Almost nothing in topical skincare is tested as a finished product — the usual claim borrows a study of the raw molecule in a dish. Timeline is the exception in this section: they ran controlled trials on the product you would buy, and publish the design. Here it is unedited:
- 8-week randomized clinical trial of 48 healthy women aged 50 to 75 years
- 8-week randomized clinical trial of 36 healthy women aged 40 to 65 years
What they report from those trials:
- Renews mitochondria to target visible aging markers
- Hydrates & reduces wrinkle visibility
- Dermatologist approved & sensitive skin safe
Trial design quoted from Timeline's own product page, 2026-08-08. Read it as what was measured, not as a promise about you.
Does Urolithin A actually work on skin?
This is a different question from whether it works injected, and the answer is often different too — a molecule has to survive the stratum corneum before any of its biology matters. Full Urolithin A breakdown →
Human clinical evidence
- Trialled as a finished topical, which almost nothing in skincare is. Timeline reports two 8-week randomised trials (48 women aged 50–75; 36 women aged 40–65) plus a 4-week randomised trial of 132 participants, measuring wrinkle depth, hydration and barrier endpoints on the products themselves.
- The oral form is separately and independently well evidenced for mitochondrial and muscle endpoints — a rarity for anything sold in a cosmetic.
Correlative data
- The company running the trials is the company selling the product, which is worth stating plainly. It does not make the trials wrong; it means independent replication is still the missing piece.
How the mechanism reads
- The mechanism is mitophagy — clearing damaged mitochondria so cells replace them. Applied to skin the argument is that fibroblasts with better mitochondrial quality make more collagen, which is a plausible chain with the first and last links measured.
- Note that most 'urolithin A' elsewhere is pomegranate extract, which is NOT the same thing — only about 40% of people carry the gut bacteria to convert it. Mitopure is the isolated molecule, and that distinction is the entire reason the ingredient exists.
- The mitophagy mechanism — clearing damaged mitochondria so the remaining pool works better — is the most interesting idea in this section, and the human evidence behind it is oral, at gram-scale doses, measured in muscle rather than skin.
- A topical version is a reasonable extrapolation and nothing more. The study that would settle it is a split-face trial measuring a skin endpoint, and it has not been run — so if you are buying urolithin A for the evidence, buy the oral one.
Mitopure oral vs Mitopure topical
Timeline is the one partner in the Vault selling the same molecule in two directions. The oral Mitopure is the systemic route — it is what the muscle-endurance and mitochondrial-function trials used, and it acts everywhere blood goes. The topical line is local: it puts urolithin A into skin, and the trials above measure skin outcomes, not systemic ones. Neither replaces the other, and neither needs the other to work. If you are choosing one, choose by the outcome you want measured.

How to use Mitopure Firming Serum
Step 3 — Serum — thinnest first
Apply 2-3 drops on clean, dry skin. Use fingertips to gently press formula into face and neck. Use daily, morning and night, before moisturizing. For daytime usage, follow with SPF. The evidence behind urolithin A is oral and measured in muscle. A topical is a reasonable extrapolation — pleasant, unproven on a skin endpoint.
What to expect, and when
Timeline's trials ran 8 weeks, with wrinkle changes reported from around two weeks. Judge it at 8 weeks, not before.
