- Trials consistently show improved skin hydration and short-term smoothing. It is a humectant that works — but it hydrates, it does not remodel.

- Near-universal in moisturisers because it is cheap, stable and does something noticeable immediately.
How the mechanism reads
- Molecular weight decides everything here, and almost nobody says so. High-molecular-weight HA (>1,000 kDa) sits on the surface and holds water — that is the instant plumping. Low-molecular-weight fragments penetrate further but have been associated with pro-inflammatory signalling in some work. Most products blend both and specify neither.
- In dry air, HA with nothing sealed over it can pull water OUT of skin. Always follow it with an occlusive.
- Molecular weight decides what it does, and most products do not tell you. High-molecular-weight HA sits on the surface as a hydrating film; low-molecular-weight fragments penetrate further and have been argued to signal repair — and, at the small end, to be pro-inflammatory. 'Multi-weight' on a label is the useful claim; 'hyaluronic acid' alone is not.
- The failure mode nobody warns about: HA is a humectant, so in genuinely dry air it will pull water from wherever it can get it, including out of your own skin. Applied to damp skin and sealed with an occlusive it works as intended. Applied to dry skin in a dry room and left bare, it can leave you tighter than before.
