Does Centella Asiatica actually work on skin?
This is a different question from whether it works injected, and the answer is often different too — a molecule has to survive the stratum corneum before any of its biology matters.
Human clinical evidence
- Reasonable trial evidence for barrier repair, reduced redness and improved wound healing — mostly from madecassoside and asiaticoside, the isolated triterpenes rather than the whole extract.

- Its reputation comes from wound care rather than cosmetics, which is the right way round — this is a barrier-repair and calming-after-damage active, and it is at its best after retinoids, acids or sun rather than as a headline anti-ageing ingredient.
How the mechanism reads
- Read as a repair ingredient, not an anti-ageing one. It is what you pair WITH retinol or an acid to make that regimen tolerable — its value shows up as being able to keep using the strong thing.
- The activity sits in four triterpenes — asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid — which is why the label matters more here than almost anywhere else in skincare. 'Centella extract' can mean a standardised fraction of those four, or it can mean leaf water. Products that state the fraction are making a checkable claim; products that say 'Centella' are not.
