Aldosterone

Also known as: Mineralocorticoid

An adrenal hormone that regulates sodium retention, potassium excretion, blood volume and blood pressure.

Primary aldosteronism is the most common correctable cause of resistant high blood pressure — and it's massively under-diagnosed. Worth checking in anyone with hypertension that won't respond to treatment, or with unexplained low potassium.

What Aldosterone is usually tested alongside

On its own, one marker is a data point. These panels include Aldosterone plus the markers that make it interpretable — each names every test, why it is on the list, and loads the whole set into your cart in one click at 10% off.

Would you feel it? Symptoms Aldosterone helps explain

People rarely search for a marker — they search for how they feel. These are the complaints where this marker is worth checking, and whether it is a first-line test or a follow-up once the obvious causes are ruled out.

Why your Aldosterone might be wrong

Most abnormal results are interference, not disease. These are the things that measurably move this specific marker — check them before you change anything. Each one says whether the number is wrong and should be repeated, badly timed and should be redrawn, or real with a cause worth explaining.

🩸 Posture — and this one is largeThe draw itself skewed it — repeat it

Aldosterone roughly doubles on standing. Upright and supine reference ranges are completely different numbers.

The draw must record your posture, and the aldosterone-to-renin ratio is the actual screening test.

💊 Blood pressure medicationsA real change — account for the cause

Spironolactone, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta-blockers and diuretics all distort the aldosterone-renin ratio, in different directions.

This test needs planning with a doctor — several drugs must be stopped for weeks beforehand.

🏃 Salt intake and potassiumA real change — retest once it passes

Both alter aldosterone substantially. Low potassium suppresses it, which can mask primary aldosteronism.

Correct potassium before testing.

What Aldosterone means in combination

A single marker tells you a little. Combinations tell you the story — these are the named patterns this marker takes part in, and what each one points at.

High aldosterone with low potassium — the curable hypertension
Aldosterone high · potassium low · blood pressure raised

Primary aldosteronism, the most common curable cause of high blood pressure and one almost nobody screens for. It carries higher cardiovascular and kidney risk than blood-pressure-matched essential hypertension, and it has specific treatment.

Confirm with an aldosterone-to-renin ratio, planned with a doctor — several blood pressure drugs distort it and need stopping first. Correct potassium before testing, because low potassium suppresses aldosterone and can mask the diagnosis.

Markers rarely answer alone. These are the ones that put Aldosterone in context — each with its own full breakdown.
