Why your Amylase might be wrong
Most abnormal results are interference, not disease. These are the things that measurably move this specific marker — check them before you change anything. Each one says whether the number is wrong and should be repeated, badly timed and should be redrawn, or real with a cause worth explaining.
Red cells rupturing in the tube spill their contents into the serum. Potassium, LDH, AST and magnesium are far higher inside cells than outside, so a haemolysed sample reports them falsely high. Caused by a difficult draw, a narrow needle, or shaking the tube.
The lab usually flags it. If your result is odd and the report mentions haemolysis, that is your answer — repeat the draw.
Amylase bound into a large complex cannot be cleared by the kidney and accumulates, giving a persistently raised amylase in a completely well person. A recognised cause of unnecessary pancreatic investigation.
Persistently raised amylase with a normal lipase and no symptoms should prompt a macroamylase check.
Amylase comes from salivary glands as well as pancreas — mumps, parotitis and even vigorous eating raise it.
Lipase is the more specific pancreatic marker. Use it.

Usually not the pancreas. Amylase comes from salivary glands too, and it also accumulates as macroamylase — bound into a complex too large for the kidney to clear — producing a persistently raised value in a completely well person. A recognised cause of unnecessary investigation.
Lipase is the specific pancreatic marker; trust it over amylase. Persistently high amylase with a normal lipase and no symptoms should prompt a macroamylase check. Severe pain radiating to the back is an emergency.
